This Turkoman–Afghan Kafkazi Repeat Medallion Carpet is a remarkable interpretation of the ancient geometric weaving traditions of Central Asia. Woven by skilled Afghan artisans using handspun Karakul wool, the rug possesses a beautiful natural lustre created by the high lanolin content of the wool. This gives the pile a soft glow that changes with the direction of the light, bringing the carpet to life throughout the day. Dyed entirely with plant-based natural dyes, every colour will mature gracefully over the years, developing the rich patina that collectors admire in heirloom-quality tribal carpets.

The first feature that captures the eye is the magnificent madder rustic red. Derived from the roots of the madder plant, this ancient dye has been used across Persia and Central Asia for centuries. Rather than producing a flat colour, natural madder creates countless subtle variations—from deep burgundy and brick red to warm terracotta and glowing crimson. Against the dark navy and soft ivory field, these reds create a dramatic yet harmonious composition that feels both bold and timeless.

The design itself originates from the old Turkmen tribes of Central Asia, particularly those who once inhabited present-day Turkmenistan before many weaving traditions spread into northern Afghanistan. This “Kafkazi” interpretation reflects the influence of Caucasian geometric aesthetics, where strong architectural forms replace flowing floral ornamentation. The result is a carpet that feels powerful, balanced and deeply rooted in nomadic culture.

Description

Afghan Khal Mohamadi rugs, also known as Khal Mohammadi or Khal Mohammadi rugs, are handwoven rugs that originate from Afghanistan, specifically from the region around Kunduz. They are named after the Turkoman Khal Mohamadi tribe, known for their skilled craftsmanship in rug weaving.

This Turkoman–Afghan Kafkazi Repeat Medallion Carpet is a remarkable interpretation of the ancient geometric weaving traditions of Central Asia. The layout is particularly captivating. Four large octagonal repeat medallions dominate the field, arranged in perfect symmetry. Their stepped outlines and spiralling motifs create movement without disturbing the disciplined geometry. These medallions symbolize stability, protection and continuity, while their repetition gives the carpet a rhythmic elegance that makes it equally suitable for traditional or contemporary interiors.

Between the medallions lies a carefully considered network of smaller tribal motifs. Stylized flowers, protective amulets, hanging ornaments and geometric rosettes fill the ivory field without ever appearing crowded. Every small motif serves a purpose, maintaining visual harmony while reflecting the symbolic language of Turkmen weaving traditions. The ivory background acts as a canvas that allows each geometric element to stand out with remarkable clarity.
One particularly charming feature is the repeated ewer or jug motifs found throughout the design. In Central Asian symbolism these vessels often represent hospitality, abundance and the sharing of life’s blessings. Their inclusion transforms the carpet from a decorative textile into a narrative woven with cultural meaning.

The multiple borders frame the composition beautifully. Narrow guard borders filled with tiny tribal motifs lead into wider borders rich with repeating geometric flowers and rosettes. This layered framing draws the eye naturally toward the centre while giving the carpet exceptional visual depth and structure.
What makes this rug especially appealing is the balance between precision and spontaneity. The overall composition is mathematically symmetrical, yet the hand-knotting introduces tiny individual variations that reveal the human hand behind every knot. These subtle irregularities are not imperfections—they are the signature of authentic craftsmanship.

This carpet is more than a floor covering; it is a celebration of centuries-old Turkmen artistry, preserved by Afghan master weavers. The combination of handspun Karakul wool, naturally aged vegetable dyes, the glowing madder reds, and the timeless repeat-medallion geometry makes it a highly collectible piece that will only become more beautiful with age. It is a rug that carries the spirit of the Silk Road—rugged, elegant, and filled with the enduring beauty of Central Asian tribal tradition.
