Original price was: RM11,500.00.Current price is: RM6,300.00.

This exquisite Turkoman–Afghan Ala Makhmal Repeat Design Carpet is a superb example of the timeless weaving traditions of the Turkmen tribes of Central Asia. Hand-knotted by master Afghan weavers using handspun Karakul wool, the rug possesses a remarkable natural sheen created by the lanolin-rich fibres of Karakul sheep. This luxurious wool reflects light beautifully, giving the carpet a subtle velvet-like appearance—hence the name “Ala Makhmal,” meaning multi-coloured velvet. Every knot reflects centuries of nomadic craftsmanship, while the use of plant-based natural dyes ensures that the colours will mellow gracefully, becoming even richer and more desirable with age.

The most striking feature of this vintage masterpiece is its magnificent madder rustic red field. Produced from the ancient madder root, this colour has long been the hallmark of Turkmen tribal carpets. Rather than appearing flat, the naturally dyed wool displays delicate tonal variations, known as abrash, where shades of crimson, brick red, ruby and deep terracotta blend effortlessly across the surface. These gentle colour shifts are highly prized by collectors, revealing the authenticity of hand-dyed wool and adding warmth and character that synthetic dyes can never replicate.

Unlike the more familiar Turkmen carpets dominated by repetitive tribal guls, this Ala Makhmal design introduces a more decorative interpretation of tribal artistry. The repeating motifs resemble stylised geometric floral medallions, combining angular tribal geometry with elegant botanical influences. This fusion reflects the cultural exchanges that took place along the Silk Road, where Turkmen nomads absorbed artistic inspirations from neighbouring Persian and Central Asian civilizations while preserving their own bold geometric identity.

Description

Each repeating medallion is richly detailed and beautifully balanced. The motifs almost resemble stylised blossoms enclosed within strong architectural outlines, symbolising prosperity, renewal and harmony. Small ivory highlights illuminate each medallion like tiny points of light, providing contrast against the deep indigo and madder background while giving the entire composition remarkable depth.

Between the medallions, delicate vertical tribal ornaments create a graceful rhythm throughout the carpet. These motifs act almost like woven columns connecting each row, guiding the eye naturally across the field while maintaining perfect symmetry. The design achieves an impressive balance between order and movement, making the carpet feel both structured and alive.
The deep indigo border provides a magnificent frame for the glowing red field. Decorated with repeating diamonds, stars and geometric rosettes, it echoes the ancient tribal symbolism associated with protection, strength and continuity. The border is bold without overwhelming the central design, allowing the luminous field to remain the focal point.
One of the most captivating aspects of this carpet is its exceptional use of contrast. The powerful madder reds, dark indigos, touches of soft ivory and subtle golden highlights work together to create extraordinary visual richness. Depending on the angle of light, the lanolin-rich Karakul wool produces a gentle shimmer that enhances every geometric motif, giving the rug an ever-changing personality throughout the day.

From a design perspective, this is a wonderfully successful composition. Although highly geometric, it avoids feeling rigid because the floral-inspired medallions soften the overall appearance. The repetition creates rhythm without monotony, while the generous open red field allows each motif to breathe. This balance makes the carpet surprisingly versatile—it complements traditional interiors filled with antiques just as naturally as modern minimalist spaces seeking warmth, texture and authentic craftsmanship.

This vintage Turkoman–Afghan Ala Makhmal carpet is far more than a decorative furnishing. It is a woven expression of Central Asian heritage, preserving the artistic language of the Turkmen tribes through generations of Afghan master weavers. The combination of handspun Karakul wool, naturally lustrous fibres, vegetable-dyed madder reds, and the distinctive repeat geometric floral design makes this a highly collectible heirloom—a rug that embodies history, artistry and enduring beauty, destined to be admired for generations to come.
