Description
The carpet has a central niche is in the form of a mihrab, with decorative side-columns and a hanging mosque lamp and was very probably hung on a wall, perhaps in the women’s quarters of a palace, to serve as a mihrab for communal prayers.
This is a superb example of the earliest Tabriz Master workshop rugs of the neo-classical revival which was instigated in the city during the last two decades of the 19th century, expressed in the style and colouring associated with the famous work shop of Haji Jalili, perhaps one of the most influential master craftsman of the revival period.
This classification of design and colours has a superb decorative contrast which is established between the areas of open space and richly and minutely embellished ornamentation., in this case the two magnificent columns which dominate the field area and give the work its visual radiance and opulence of effect.
The outstanding palette of vegetable dyes and high quality of wool testify further to the authentic Haji Jalili category to which this masterly item belongs.
