Description
This striking handmade rug is woven in Northern Afghanistan by skilled Ersari tribal weavers, carrying forward a weaving tradition deeply rooted in Central Asian culture. Hand-knotted using handspun Karakul wool, the rug has a rich, substantial texture and a natural lustre characteristic of this exceptional wool. The use of natural plant-based dyes gives the colours warmth, depth and subtle variations, adding to the individuality and character of the piece.
The design takes its inspiration from the celebrated Caucasian Shirvan and Kazakh weaving traditions. Its most commanding feature is the arrangement of three large Star Kazakh-style medallions, placed vertically along the central field. Each medallion has a bold, almost architectural geometry, formed from angular petals, hooks, stepped outlines and smaller tribal symbols. The central medallion, with its stronger red ground and contrasting yellow, navy and ivory details, creates a dramatic focal point, while the two ivory-ground medallions above and below provide balance and symmetry.
An especially charming detail is the presence of small stylised animal and tribal motifs scattered around the medallions. Such elements give tribal rugs their personality: the design feels less mechanically perfect and more like a woven expression of the artisan’s cultural vocabulary. The multiple surrounding borders, filled with rhythmic geometric and hooked motifs, frame the three medallions beautifully and give the rug a strong sense of structure.
The colour palette is particularly attractive. Madder-like terracotta and brick red, deep indigo navy, warm ivory, mustard yellow, earthy brown and touches of green work together remarkably well. Although the design has historic Caucasian roots, these colours feel surprisingly contemporary. The deep blue provides definition, while the warm reds and natural ivory make the rug inviting rather than overpowering.
This combination makes the rug highly versatile for interior decoration. It could bring warmth and character to a modern minimalist living room, complement timber and leather in a more rustic interior, or sit naturally amongst antiques and traditional furniture.
