Code 9254 Afghan Turkoman Saruk Antique Carpet 218x148cm Hand knotted

Original price was: RM6,900.00.Current price is: RM4,950.00.

This circa 1930 Turkoman-Afghan Saruk is a magnificent expression of Central Asian tribal artistry, woven by skilled Afghan Turkoman weavers who preserved centuries-old traditions through every carefully tied knot. Hand-knotted using handspun Karakul wool, the rug possesses the unmistakable natural sheen created by the lanolin still present in the wool—a characteristic that gives antique Turkoman carpets their rich, almost velvety glow. Combined with plant-based natural dyes, the colours have matured beautifully over nearly a century, developing the soft patina and depth that collectors admire and that cannot be artificially reproduced.

The first impression is its deep madder rustic red field, one of the most treasured colours in Turkoman weaving. Derived from the madder root, this warm crimson radiates life and warmth while revealing subtle variations throughout the pile. These gentle tonal shifts, known as abrash, occur naturally when hand-dyed wool is woven over time, giving the carpet movement and character. Rather than appearing flat, the field seems almost illuminated from within as light catches the lustrous Karakul wool.

Running through the centre is a striking column of Saruk repeat diamond-shaped geometric medallions, one of the classic tribal motifs originating from the Turkmen tribes of Central Asia. Unlike the flowing floral designs of Persian city workshops, the Saruk tribal motif celebrates precision, balance and symbolism. Each geometric medallion is perfectly aligned yet subtly individual, reflecting the hand of the weaver rather than mechanical perfection. These repeated diamonds symbolize continuity, protection and tribal identity, creating a powerful rhythm that draws the eye naturally along the length of the carpet.

Description

Surrounding each medallion are finely executed stepped outlines and angular extensions, demonstrating the remarkable ability of tribal weavers to create complexity using purely geometric language. Small ivory and pale blue highlights provide visual relief against the dominant reds, while tiny scattered tribal motifs animate the open field without disturbing its harmony. The restrained palette allows every motif to stand proudly while preserving the bold character for which Turkoman rugs are renowned.
The multiple borders frame the composition beautifully. The broad main border is filled with repeating tribal motifs that echo the central medallions, reinforcing the sense of order and tradition. Narrow guard borders containing small geometric devices provide visual transitions between the field and the outer frame, creating depth and strengthening the architectural quality of the design.

What makes this rug particularly appealing is its authenticity. The proportions, the slightly asymmetrical tribal drawing, the naturally aged colours and the rich lanolin sheen all speak of a rug woven for everyday tribal life rather than commercial production. Every knot records the skill of the weaver, every colour reflects the surrounding natural landscape, and every motif carries the visual language of generations of Turkoman craftsmanship.

As a circa 1930 vintage tribal carpet, this piece represents a period when traditional weaving methods remained largely untouched by modern industrial influences. Its use of handspun Karakul wool, vegetable dyes and time-honoured tribal motifs places it among the more desirable examples of early 20th-century Afghan Turkoman weaving. It is both a functional textile and a historical document, preserving the artistic heritage of the Turkmen people.

This carpet would become a remarkable focal point in both traditional and contemporary interiors. The rich madder reds bring warmth and character to modern minimalist spaces, while its bold geometric composition complements rustic, industrial and classic interiors alike. More than simply a floor covering, it is a piece of living history—an heirloom that continues to tell the story of Central Asian nomadic culture through its enduring beauty, remarkable craftsmanship and timeless tribal design.
