RM2,950.00

Khotan rugs are a type of hand-woven rugs that originate from the city of Khotan (also known as Hotan) in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. These rugs have been produced in Khotan for over 2,000 years and are known for their unique blend of Chinese and Central Asian design elements.

Khotan rugs typically feature intricate geometric and floral patterns, often in soft earth tones such as beige, rust, and brown. They are also known for their high-quality wool, which is derived from local sheep and processed using traditional techniques. Some Khotan rugs may also incorporate silk or other materials. Fine quality mountain sheep wool is used on cotton base.

Description

This carpet is entirely handmade by expert artisans from the ethnic Uzbek tribes of North Afghanistan. Weaving is a generational tradition among these communities, where techniques, motifs, and dye knowledge are passed from master weavers to younger hands.

  • Weave: Double-knotted construction

  • Material: 100% natural highland sheep wool

  • Dyes: Plant-based, natural dyes

  • Texture: Firm yet supple, with a resilient pile ideal for daily living

The use of double knots enhances durability and structural strength, making this carpet especially suitable for long-term use while maintaining fine detail and clarity in the design.

Natural Wool & Plant-Based Dyes

The wool comes from highland sheep, known for their dense, lanolin-rich fleece. This gives the carpet:

  • Natural stain resistance

  • Excellent insulation and warmth

  • A soft sheen that improves beautifully with age

The colours are achieved using traditional vegetal dyes, extracted from roots, leaves, flowers, and minerals. These dyes create gentle tonal variations that add depth, warmth, and authenticity—something synthetic dyes can never replicate.

The Khotan Design – History & Symbolism

This carpet features a Khotan-inspired design, originally rooted in the ancient oasis city of Khotan along the historic Silk Road. Over centuries, this design language traveled across Central Asia and was adopted by Uzbek and Afghan weavers, who infused it with their own tribal identity.

Key design elements include:

  • Spacious central field with balanced symmetry, giving the rug a calm, architectural presence

  • Geometric medallions and rosettes, symbolising protection, harmony, and continuity

  • Stylised floral motifs, representing prosperity and the natural world

  • Strong framing borders, anchoring the design and enhancing visual structure

The warm golden ground, complemented by soft blues, ivory, and deep rust tones, reflects classic Khotan aesthetics—elegant, luminous, and timeless, yet grounded by tribal strength.

Where This Carpet Fits Best

Because of its balance of beauty and strength, this piece works wonderfully in:

  • Living rooms

  • Studies or home offices

  • Bedrooms

  • Refined modern interiors needing warmth and character

It pairs beautifully with both classic wooden furniture and contemporary neutral interiors.
