The Uzbek-Afghan Gabbeh carpet is a beautiful interpretation of one of the most cherished tribal weaving traditions of Persia, reimagined by master Uzbek-Afghan weavers using exceptionally fine handspun Karakul wool. Inspired by the simple elegance of the famous Persian Gabbeh carpets of Shiraz, this piece retains their artistic soul while offering a finer weave, greater detail and the luxurious texture that only superior Karakul wool can provide.

Hand-knotted from handspun Karakul wool, the carpet possesses a natural silky lustre created by the wool’s rich lanolin content. This subtle sheen gives the surface a soft glow that changes beautifully with the light, while the resilient fibres ensure the carpet will retain its beauty for generations. Every colour is created using plant and fruit-based natural dyes, making each rug environmentally friendly, completely unique and highly collectible.

The magnificent pomegranate red field is the heart of this carpet. Derived from traditional botanical dyes, this rich crimson shade recalls the vibrant colours found in the finest Persian tribal rugs from Shiraz. The natural handspun wool creates gentle tonal variations, known as abrash, giving the carpet remarkable depth and movement. This living colour is warm, inviting and full of character, growing even richer as the rug develops its natural patina over the years.

Surrounding the central field is a striking border of softly blended colour blocks in shades of indigo, sky blue, ivory, gold, walnut brown and muted sage green. These harmonious colours create a beautiful frame around the glowing red centre, adding a contemporary touch while remaining deeply rooted in ancient tribal aesthetics.
Scattered gracefully across the field are charming stylised birds, woven with delightful simplicity. In Persian and Central Asian folklore, birds symbolise freedom, happiness, hope and blessings, bringing positive energy into the home. Their playful placement across the open field reflects the spontaneous creativity of tribal weavers, making every carpet a unique artistic expression rather than a rigidly formal design.

The history of Gabbeh rugs stretches back centuries to the nomadic tribes of southern Persia, particularly the Qashqai and Luri peoples around the Shiraz region. Originally woven for family use rather than trade, Gabbeh carpets were prized for their thick, luxurious wool and minimalist designs inspired by everyday life. Their motifs often included birds, animals, flowers and simple geometric forms, each carrying personal meanings and stories from the weaver’s own life. This artistic freedom gives Gabbeh rugs their distinctive warmth and individuality, qualities that have made them highly sought after by collectors and interior designers around the world.

This Uzbek-Afghan Gabbeh beautifully honours that heritage while elevating it through the use of superior Karakul wool and a finer weave than many traditional Persian Gabbeh carpets. The result is a rug that combines rustic tribal charm with exceptional craftsmanship, offering both elegance and durability.

Perfect for modern, contemporary, Scandinavian, rustic or traditional interiors, this handmade masterpiece brings warmth, colour and authenticity into any space. More than a decorative carpet, it is a celebration of nomadic artistry, natural materials and centuries of weaving tradition—a timeless heirloom that will continue to tell its story for generations to come.
