This beautiful Uzbek-Afghan Sultani runner is an elegant revival of the great Sultanabad floral tradition, interpreted through the character and craftsmanship of Afghan weaving. Handwoven from handspun Karakul wool, the carpet possesses a rich texture and a distinctive natural sheen from the lanolin retained in the wool. The use of plant- and fruit-based natural dyes gives the colours extraordinary warmth and variation, adding to the individuality and collectible character of the piece.
The most striking feature is its deep chocolate-brown field, which creates a dramatic background for the colourful floral composition. Against this dark ground, shades of turquoise, teal blue, madder red, coral, soft pink, green, golden yellow and ivory seem almost illuminated. The natural lustre of the Karakul wool enhances this effect, allowing the colours to subtly change in intensity depending on the direction of the light.
The design takes inspiration from antique Persian Sultanabad carpets, celebrated for their generous floral drawing and relaxed, flowing compositions. Instead of a dominant central medallion, this runner uses an all-over repeating floral arrangement, allowing the eye to travel continuously along its length. Flowers and leaves are not drawn with photographic precision; they are simplified and stylised by the weaver into expressive forms. The composition also demonstrates beautiful rhythm and symmetry. Floral clusters repeat along the central axis, while outward-facing vines and blossoms balance one another on either side. Yet subtle variations prevent the pattern from becoming mechanical. This controlled irregularity is one of the great pleasures of a genuinely handmade carpet—it reveals the human hand behind the weaving.
The border is equally impressive. A substantial floral border surrounds the dark field with a continuous procession of rosettes, palmettes, leaves and stylised blossoms, accompanied by narrower geometric guard borders. The turquoise and blue highlights running through the borders provide a particularly attractive contrast against the dark brown background and visually frame the central garden.
At approximately 231 × 81 cm, this Sultani runner is beautifully proportioned for an entrance, hallway, beside a dining table, behind a sofa or as an accent piece in a sophisticated living space. The darker ground can work particularly well with timber flooring and neutral interiors, while its turquoise, red and coral details can connect beautifully with cushions, artwork and other decorative pieces.
