Description
This magnificent Uzbek-Afghan Sultani runner is a vibrant celebration of Central Asian craftsmanship and antique Caucasian tribal design. Handwoven from handspun Karakul wool, the carpet has a wonderfully rich texture and a natural lustre created by the lanolin retained within the wool. The use of plant- and fruit-based natural dyes produces colours with depth and subtle variation, giving the rug the warm, organic character associated with old tribal carpets.
The most captivating feature is its antique-revival Caucasian geometric composition. Four large diamond-shaped tribal medallions travel rhythmically along the length of the runner. Rather than being identical repetitions, each medallion has its own personality: deep indigo blue, warm brick and madder red, turquoise-green and earthy tones alternate across the composition. This variation gives the runner a sense of movement and makes it appear almost like a collection of individual tribal emblems woven together into one story.
Surrounding the medallions are wonderful hooked geometric forms, stylised flowers, rosettes, crosses, stars and small symbolic devices. The elongated tulip-like elements projecting from the diamonds are particularly striking, softening the strong geometry with an almost botanical character. The angular hooks surrounding the medallions are characteristic of the visual language associated with Caucasian and wider Central Asian tribal weaving, where floral and natural forms are transformed into bold geometric abstractions.
The golden ochre field is especially beautiful. It provides a glowing background against which the indigo blues, turquoise greens, madder reds, rust, burgundy and ivory details stand out dramatically. Natural dyes give these colours a mellow richness rather than an artificial brightness, while the sheen of Karakul wool changes their appearance according to the direction of the light.
Equally impressive is the border. A procession of colourful octagonal rosettes and small tribal symbols runs along both sides, almost resembling beads, jewels or protective amulets surrounding the central composition. Additional narrow guard borders and geometric devices at either end give the runner a strong architectural frame without overpowering its central medallions.
One of the great beauties of this Sultani carpet is that it does not feel mechanically perfect. Slight variations in the drawing, colour and individual motifs reveal the hand of the weaver. These irregularities are precisely what give a genuine handmade tribal rug its individuality, warmth and soul.
At approximately 313 × 89 cm, its elegant narrow proportions make it ideal for a long hallway, entrance, gallery, beside a dining table or behind a sofa.
