This magnificent Uzbek-Afghan Sultani runner is a striking example of traditional Central Asian craftsmanship combined with the powerful geometry of antique Caucasian carpet design. Handwoven from handspun Karakul wool, the rug has a rich, tactile character and a subtle natural sheen created by the lanolin retained in the wool. The use of plant- and fruit-based natural dyes gives the colours remarkable depth, with gentle variations that make the surface feel alive rather than mechanically uniform.
The design is an antique revival inspired by Caucasian tribal weaving traditions. Its long ivory field is dominated by a dramatic sequence of large, angular geometric medallions arranged vertically along the central axis. These almost architectural forms, with their hooked outlines, diamonds and stylised extensions, create a strong sense of movement through the entire length of the runner. Smaller tribal symbols, crosses, rosettes, diamonds and abstract floral forms are scattered between the major medallions, giving the composition the spontaneous character associated with old village and tribal rugs.
Particularly beautiful is the contrast between the warm ivory ground and deep indigo-blue borders. Rustic madder reds, terracotta, muted gold, soft blue, green and earthy brown provide additional layers of colour. The border is exceptionally important to this composition. Several narrower guard borders frame this main border, creating a beautifully layered transition between the powerful outer frame and the lighter central field.
What makes this Sultani runner particularly successful is its balance between symmetry and tribal freedom. At first glance the design appears highly ordered, but closer inspection reveals subtle differences in the motifs, proportions and colours. These small variations are part of the beauty of hand weaving and give the carpet individuality and soul.
At approximately 293 × 119 cm, its elongated proportions make it ideal for a hallway, entrance gallery, beside a long dining table or behind a sofa. Yet this is more than a decorative runner.
