Description
This is a striking vintage tribal rug from Quchan, Iran, with a strong geometric character and a beautifully balanced traditional palette. Hand-knotted by tribal weavers from Quchan in Iran, this vintage rug is a distinctive example of traditional Persian tribal craftsmanship. Its character comes from both the handwork and the natural materials used in its construction.
The rug is woven from 100% natural sheep’s wool, giving the pile a warm, substantial texture. The wool has been coloured using natural dyes, producing the rich brick-red field, deep indigo/navy outlines, warm ochre and ivory tones seen throughout the composition. Natural dyes are particularly attractive in vintage rugs because their colours can develop greater softness and character with age.
Visually, the rug has a wonderfully expressive geometric tribal composition. A series of large angular medallion-like motifs runs vertically through the central red field, surrounded by stylised floral, botanical and tribal forms. The wide ivory border provides strong contrast, decorated with repeating red geometric flowers connected by dark scrolling forms. Small variations and irregularities in the motifs are part of the charm of handwoven tribal work rather than the mechanical repetition found in machine-made carpets.
At 163 × 99 cm, this is an excellent accent size. It would work beautifully beside a bed, in an entrance or hallway, in a study, or as a statement rug in a smaller sitting area. The warm red and earthy natural tones can also provide an attractive contrast against contemporary interiors with timber, cream, beige, charcoal or neutral furniture.
Key details: 100% natural sheep’s wool; hand-knotted construction; natural dyes; vintage Quchan tribal origin; approximately 163 × 99 cm; stock/reference #9331.
Pure wool and hand-knotted construction also make this type of rug well suited to practical use when properly cared for. We recommend gentle regular vacuuming without a rotating brush, periodic rotation, prompt blotting of spills, and specialist cleaning when required. These care principles are also consistent with CARPET INN’s guidance for handmade rugs.
