Description
This handmade carpet is a striking example of traditional craftsmanship from Andkhoy, a historic weaving center in northern Afghanistan renowned for producing high-quality tribal rugs. Measuring 209 x 117 cm, this piece was woven by the Turkoman tribal group, specifically the Suleman clan, who are celebrated for their use of bold, geometric motifs and deep cultural symbolism in rug design.
Made from 100% wool, the pile and foundation are crafted using hand-spun wool, offering durability and warmth. The wool is known for its sheen and strength, which adds both beauty and practicality to the carpet. The rich rustic red background and contrasting deep indigo-blue and black motifs are achieved through the use of natural, plant-based dyes, which give the rug a vibrant yet aged patina — a mark of authenticity and artisan skill. The central motif features repeated Elephant Foot designs, locally known as “Feel-Pai”, a hallmark of Turkoman rugs. This octagonal gul, used in series, is a powerful tribal emblem, symbolizing strength, power, and continuity. The carpet’s borders feature small geometric and hooked motifs that represent protective and symbolic meanings rooted in nomadic tradition. These patterns are passed down through generations and reflect the weavers’ identity and beliefs. Though tribal in origin, the rug has a modern appeal due to its structured layout and bold graphic language. It is a heavy-duty piece, built to last under frequent use, making it ideal for both rustic and contemporary interiors. The visible wear and soft fading contribute to its antique character, enhancing its charm and collectible value.
This Andkhoy Turkoman rug is a museum-worthy piece that merges tribal authenticity with functional elegance. Its rich symbolism, natural materials, and time-earned beauty make it not just a floor covering, but a living artifact of Afghan cultural heritage.
